May 17 – The 5th Annual Epworth Women in Healthcare Luncheon was held at Zinc, Federation Square to raise awareness of the breast cancer gene. Jane O’Brien was a guest speaker and gave a presentation When Cancer is in your DNA: Facing The Breast Cancer Gene And Making Life-Changing Decisions, exploring some of the issues involved, including how to identify if you are at risk of carrying the abnormal gene and the options available to women who test positive. More than 300 guests also heard the courageous firsthand story from one of Jane’s patients who has faced this situation, and made the life-changing decision to have both breasts removed because of a genetic abnormality.
